Detroit Lions– Dave Fipp enters Week 1 with considerable turnover across Detroit’s special-teams units. Tom Kennedy is taking on punt-return responsibilities, the kickoff-return combination has changed and several players who have never played regular-season special teams for the Lions are expected to have immediate roles.

Fipp discussed Kennedy and Jacob Saylors in the return game, Jack Fox’s captaincy, Jake Bates’ development, Eric O’Neill’s special-teams potential and how Detroit will build its units around a new group of players.

TALKING POINTS

• Kennedy Gets The Punt Return Job

• Two Returners Must Threaten Defenses

• Fox Earned His Teammates’ Respect

• Bates Is Still Developing

• Special Teams Has Major Turnover

• O’Neill Shows Natural Football Feel

• Long Kicks Are Worth The Attempt

• Rule Stability Changes The Focus

• Kickoff Strategy Will Keep Evolving

Kennedy Gets The Punt Return Job

Tom Kennedy has handled return opportunities before, but Week 1 places him in a more defined role after Detroit moved on from other options. Punt return requires more than open-field ability because the returner has to judge flight, traffic and field position before securing possession. Kennedy’s previous game and preseason work gave Fipp evidence that he can create yards after the catch.

Reporter’s question (reconstructed): “How do you feel about Tom Kennedy returning punts this year?”

Two Returners Must Threaten Defenses

The current kickoff structure makes both deep returners relevant because opponents can direct the ball toward whichever player appears less dangerous. Detroit therefore needs two players capable of handling the football rather than using one return specialist beside a non-return threat. Fipp believes Kennedy and Jacob Saylors both have enough experience to keep the kickoff team balanced.

Reporter’s question: “Have you kind of settled on the second one given the importance of both of those returners?”

Fox Earned His Teammates’ Respect

Jack Fox has been one of Detroit’s most consistent specialists, but his selection as a captain reflects more than punting performance. Specialists operate separately during portions of practice, making locker-room respect especially meaningful when teammates vote one into a leadership role. Fox also directly controls field position, giving Detroit a reliable option when drives end outside scoring range.

Reporter’s question: “Jack Fox, named a captain. Just what have you seen of his leadership over the years?”

Detroit Lions– Kelvin Sheppard enters his second season coordinating the defense with more scheme carryover and a roster that gives him different personnel options at multiple levels. Camp allowed Detroit to test ideas, identify what the players can execute at full speed and decide which parts of the defense are ready to carry into Week 1.

Sheppard discussed veteran safety experience, Detroit’s young pass rushers, a healthier Alim McNeill, blitz packages, Tyler Shough, Devin White and why limiting self-inflicted explosive plays has been an offseason priority.

TALKING POINTS

• Camp Turned Ideas Into A Vision

• Veteran Safeties Expand The Menu

• Young Rushers Still Must Prove It

• McNeill Finally Looks Like Himself

• Blitz Volume Depends On The Players

• Shough Presents A Real Week 1 Test

• Front Versatility Creates Options

• White Raised The Competition Level

• Explosive Plays Must Come Down

Camp Turned Ideas Into A Vision

Sheppard entered camp with schematic concepts and personnel ideas, but those plans only become useful once players show they can execute them. The difference in year two is that returning defenders already understand much of the foundation. That allows coaches to spend less time teaching assignments and more time explaining how opponents attack the call and why each technique changes by situation.

Reporter’s question: “What do you know about your defense now that maybe you didn’t know at the beginning of training camp?”

Veteran Safeties Expand The Menu

Chuck Clark and Avonte Maddox do not bring the same skill sets as Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch, but their combined NFL experience gives Sheppard different advantages. Veteran safeties have already seen common route concepts, formations and situational tendencies, allowing the coordinator to spend less time explaining what an offense is attempting and more time adjusting how Detroit wants to defend it.

Reporter’s question: “Your two starting safeties weren’t full-time starters for you last year, but how does their experience help them get acclimated?”

Detroit Lions– Aidan Hutchinson enters Week 1 after a full training camp centered on football instead of the injury questions that followed him into the previous season.

Hutchinson discussed the details behind his pass-rush development, Kelvin Sheppard’s defense, Jack Campbell and Alim McNeill, rookie Blake Miller and the Week 1 challenge from New Orleans.

TALKING POINTS

• Hutchinson Had A Full Camp

• Hutchinson Leaves 2025 Behind

• Sheppard Has More Answers

• The Rush Is In The Details

• Pass Rush Requires Constant Answers

• Freedom Still Has Rules

• Campbell Runs The Back Seven

• McNeill Looks Back To Form

• Golf Became An Offseason Competition

• Shough Changes The Rush Plan

• Captaincy Comes From Teammates

• Miller Is Correcting Mistakes

Hutchinson Had A Full Camp

Hutchinson entered camp without the same rehabilitation questions that affected the previous offseason. That allowed him to spend his summer sharpening pass-rush technique against NFL tackles instead of measuring whether his body could simply tolerate a normal workload, giving him a cleaner runway into Week 1.

Reporter’s question: “How did you assess your play and just kind of where you think your game is at heading into week one?”

Hutchinson Leaves 2025 Behind

The Lions missed the playoffs after carrying championship expectations into 2025. Hutchinson has enough experience with this roster to understand both the team’s ceiling and how quickly a season can move the other direction. His approach is to keep that disappointment from becoming the focus of the current defense.

Reporter’s question: “Can you speak on the chip that this team has going into week one following last year?”

Jahmyr Gibbs enters Week 1 after handling the largest workload of his NFL career and now steps into an even clearer lead role in a reshaped Lions backfield.

Gibbs discussed his preparation, Drew Petzing’s offense, Alvin Kamara’s influence, his receiving versatility, fantasy expectations and the development of Sione Vaki.

TALKING POINTS

• Gibbs Keeps The Same Routine

• Petzing Connects Run And Pass

• Gibbs Respects The Saints Test

• The Lead Role Is Familiar

• The Offense Feels Different

• Fantasy Expectations Follow Gibbs

• Kamara Helped Shape Gibbs’ Game

• Gibbs Keeps New Wrinkles Quiet

• Petzing Earned Trust Quickly

• Gibbs Trusts Goff’s Comfort Level

• Gibbs Remains A Receiving Weapon

• Petzing Is Changing His Locations

• Space Changes The Matchup

• Fame Has Not Changed Gibbs Much

• Vaki Is Becoming A True Running Back

Gibbs Keeps The Same Routine

Gibbs already handled 320 offensive touches last season while playing 67 percent of the offensive snaps, so becoming the clear lead option is not a complete change in workload. The question is whether another increase in carries required him to alter the physical preparation or recovery routine that supported his production in 2025.

Reporter’s question: “Have you prepared your body any way differently knowing that you are the top guy going into this season?”

Petzing Connects Run And Pass

Gibbs creates problems because the Lions can run or throw without changing personnel. Petzing can increase that stress by making the initial presentation of both concepts resemble each other. If linebackers hesitate while determining run or pass, the offense can create better blocking angles underneath or more space behind them.

Reporter’s question: “What have you liked about Drew’s offense, maybe in particular when it comes to the run game and the use of the running backs in the pass game as well?”

Detroit Lions - Jared Goff enters Week 1 with a new offensive coordinator, multiple changes across the offensive line and a Lions team trying to rebound from a 9-8 season that ended outside the playoffs. With another season of championship expectations surrounding the team, the off-season work must be enough to carry them all the way this time.

Goff discussed Drew Petzing’s offense, Penei Sewell’s move to left tackle, protection communication, Brandon Staley’s Saints defense and why the 2026 Lions have to establish their own identity.

Week 1 Finally Brings An Opponent

Training camp is finished and the Lions can finally prepare for another team. It has been eight months since their last meaningful game, and Sunday provides the first real test of whether the timing, communication and execution built throughout the offseason can hold up when an opponent begins forcing adjustments.

Reporter’s question: “How thrilled are you to get on the field and actually face somebody and get a game actually?”

The Identity Behind Goff’s Optimism

The Lions went 9-8 and finished last in the NFC North after entering 2025 with championship expectations. With much of the roster’s top-end talent still in place, the larger question is what Goff believes can separate this team when injuries, personnel changes or difficult stretches begin testing the locker room.

Reporter’s question: “You guys have such good topline talent on your roster. What is sort of the intangible or the X factor that gives you the most optimism about this season?”

Detroit Lions– Jim O’Neill enters Week 1 with the secondary operating without Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch while Chuck Clark, Avonte Maddox and Thomas Harper handle larger responsibilities at safety. That changes the personnel, but Detroit still wants the back end capable of processing Sheppard’s calls, communicating adjustments and supporting an aggressive pressure package.

O’Neill discussed Joseph and Branch’s recovery, why veteran experience helps stabilize the defense, Maddox’s transition to safety, crowd-noise communication, Nick Whiteside’s versatility, pressure packages and what Devin White adds at linebacker.

TALKING POINTS

• Joseph And Branch Keep Progressing

• Veterans Stabilize The Safety Room

• Maddox Has Grown Into Safety

• Crowd Noise Tests The Defense Too

• Whiteside Adds Safety Versatility

• The Back End Is Better Prepared

• Camp Prepared Them For Week 1

• Pressure Can Come From Anywhere

• Devin White Adds Speed And Force

• O’Neill Sees His Son’s Confidence

Joseph And Branch Keep Progressing

Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch remain central pieces of Detroit’s long-term safety plan, but Week 1 begins with the Lions having to function without both. Their rehab progress still affects how the staff plans future packages because their eventual return would change the range, ball production and matchup flexibility available on the back end.

Reporter’s question (reconstructed): “How are Kerby and Brian doing, and what have you seen from them as they continue working back?”

Veterans Stabilize The Safety Room

With Joseph and Branch unavailable, experience becomes especially useful in the middle of the defense. Chuck Clark and Avonte Maddox have played enough NFL football to recognize formations, communicate checks and adjust before the snap. Thomas Harper gives Detroit another safety with range, creating a group with different traits instead of asking one replacement to replicate Joseph or Branch.

Reporter’s question: “Just the benefit of having a guy like Chuck that’s started 80 games, like Avonte that started 44 games. Just what have you seen from those two throughout camp that makes you believe, Jim, that you’re set at that position?”

What Did Campbell Bring From New Orleans?

Campbell’s time with the Saints helped shape how he approaches coaching and building a team. Dan Campbell didn’t just carbon copy the exact blueprint Sean Payton used in New Orleans and brought it straight to Detroit. Campbell did mention how important Payton was to his development and ultimate opportunity he received in Detroit.

Reporter’s question: What does facing New Orleans mean to you, and how much did your time there influence what you built with the Lions?

My takeaway is that Campbell values the working environment as much as the personnel. He’s all about creating an environment where guys don’t just clock in, but actually buy into the culture. Good players still need clear expectations, coaching and responsibilities that fit. His answer explains why he carried parts of that experience into this job:

What Makes Juwan Johnson A Matchup To Watch?

Sunday will be a test for when the Lions defend the middle of the field. A tight end who can stretch a seam and track the ball downfield asks different questions of a defense than one used primarily as a blocker.

Reporter’s question: Having been there when Johnson began moving from receiver to tight end, how do you view his development, and how much pride do you take in it?

I’d watch how the Lions handle him when he gets a running start or releases vertically. His size alone isn’t the challenge; it’s combining that size with receiving skills. Campbell made it clear that he wouldn’t claim responsibility for the finished player:
